ResumoThe objective of this research is to evaluate the potential of RADARSAT standard mode images for forest type mapping and land cover change detection. Other sensors such as Landsat TM and Airborne SAR images were used for comparitive analysis. An area including the Tapajos National Forest, Para State, Brazil and its immediate surroundings was chosen for this investigation. The surrounding area is comprised of numerous small plots occupied by agriculture activities including abandoned areas with secondary forest. The national forest is mainly undisturbed primary forest. A shade fraction image was derived from a 1988 Landsat TM image to enhance the deforested areas in this region, i.e., this image shows the contrast between forest (medium amount of shade - bright)and non-forest (low amount of shade - dark)areas and is used as ancillary information to analyze the SAR data. The sensors that were used show a good association with an recent clear cut areas, especially the S7D image which has a high incidence angle. The difference images derived from multitemporal data showed the changes that occurred between 1988 and 1996. Several other image enhancement techniques were applied to the RADARSAT data for mapping forest types. The preliminary results of image segmentation of RADARSAT data is also encouraging and is pursued.
